Tim Hortons Muffins

Hey guys! So today’s post is part of my “Shocking Facts about Food on Campus” bit, and will be about shocking food facts about Tim Hortons! I know a lot of you go to Tim Hortons, so here are some things that you wouldn’t have thought about their food. This is only part 1, dealing with muffins, donuts, and timbits, so stay tuned for their other foods!

First of all, MUFFINS. Muffins are actually horrible in terms of calories and fat. They’re worse than some of the donuts! The muffins with the highest amount of total fat, 16 grams, are predictably, the triple chocolate, and unpredictably, the banana nut and whole grain raspberry. Both the chocolate chip muffin and whole grain blueberry muffin have 15g of fat. Don’t be fooled by the “whole grain” name! The muffins with the highest amount of cholesterol, 40mg, are the blueberry and fruit explosion. Fruit muffins aren’t necessarily good for you! My friend told me a trick for making muffins at home, if you substitute unsweetened applesauce for some of the oil, you get the same texture with less fat!

Excluding the low fat double berry muffin, every single muffin has more fat than 13 of the 18 types of donuts Tim Hortons offers. 8 out of the 11 types of muffins has equal or more calories than any donut. If you love the walnut crunch donut or sour cream glazed donut, I’m sorry for writing this. The walnut crunch has the most calories of any donut, as well as 23g of fat. The sour cream glazed has the most amount of sugar, a whopping 29g, beating out other sugary sounding donuts like chocolate glazed or honey cruller by 6g or more.

As for Timbits, nobody stops at one Timbit. Ever. If you do only ever eat one, you are either extremely nice and share, have friends who steal them all, or have really high willpower. Eating 5 Timbits puts you at the same calorie intake as most donuts, and you’ve probably already eaten more fat than if you were to have a single donut. If you have a craving, try choosing a “dip” donut. The chocolate dip, honey dip, and maple dip all have 8g of fat, no cholesterol, and about 10g of sugar. I am in no way saying this is healthy, but it’s better than having a box of 10 randomly chosen Timbits!

All nutritional information is directly from Tim Hortons’ website. Thanks for reading! Part 2 will come soon!

Much health to your hearts,
